Mushroom by Matsumura Keibun (1779-1843).
Studied with Matsumura Goshun and the great Maruyama Okyo.
This is a master painter with a delicate hand. Excellent old mounting with a fine light blue border requiring the highest level of skill on behalf of the mounting artist. Elegantly carved roller ends – “jikusaki”.
69″ x 17″ - $800
And here is another piece by Matsumura-san. It too has what we call a “good old mounting”. His fluid signature is shown below. The hanko stamp is different, as Japanese artists will have dozens and dozens of them through one lifetime.
67″ x 15″ – $600
The hue of the red flowers in this piece has to be seen in person to truly appreciate its delicacy. Painted by Ogawa Senyo (1882 – 1971), student of Kitamura Takashige and Asai Chu.
74″ x 22″ – $300
This piece is a very colourful composition with many very fine brush strokes and a wonderful sense of balance and mystery. The artist is yet to be determined, but is more than likely from the Kansai area. The man approaching the house in the moonlight is in reverance of the woman inside playing the “biwa”, a traditional Japanese stringed instrument.
Small normal damages. 70″ x 21″ – $750
A fine example of “Kacho-ga”, this piece has a subtle, soft, almost pastel shade on the rock, that provides good contrast for the sharper blues of the Hydrangea. The pose of the bird provides dynamic tension and curiosity.
By Shutei, some 80 or so years old.
76″ x 18.5″ – $225
One of the oldest pieces in our collection, this is a “gassaku” – a painting done collectively by two or more artists. Here, three different artist painted a dove each and two poets wrote poetry at the top. This very old way of writing is very hard to read. Painted in the late 1820′s or early 1830′s by:
Onishi Chinnen (1792 – 1851), Konatsubara Suikei (1781 – 1835), Kita Busei (1776 – 1857), Okukbo Shibutsu (1767 – 1837) & Kikuchi Gozan (1769 – 1849).
Good old mounting! 66″ x 21″ – $800
This scroll is a classic shodo rendering of “Namu Amida Butsu” (Praise Be To Almighty Buddha). By an unknown monk.
75″ x 20″ – $100
Here is a fine example of 20th century “kacho-ga” (or, “kacho-e”) – bird and flower composition. Artist yet to be determined.
74″ – 18″ – $200
As it is now the Year of the Dragon, this Ryuu 竜 is very appropriate to hang. It was painted by Tabata Shuto (1879 – ?), who was a student of Kikuchi Hobun. He was also very good at “kacho-ga” – bird and flower paintings.
76″ x 19″ – $300
Entitled “Budo to Kamakiri” (Grapes and Mantis), this painting has a strong, vibrant balance and gorgeous porcelain roller ends. It comes with its original box and was painted by Ishiguro Unpo (1886 – 1962).
75″ x 14″ – $300
This piece really has to be seen in person to properly appreciate the serenity it radiates. One of the many pieces I have that was painted by a sensitive artist who was destroyed in WWII. Make art – not war. -$500 – SOLD.

This gentleman is a 3rd generation bamboo artist. On his website, (http://www.chikuunsai.com/english/index.html) you can read his family’s history and look at many of their bamboo sculptures. The authentication that comes with this painting is by the former director of the Kobe museum, and it says: “This was done by Chikuunsai’s true hand… Keep it safe.” -followed by his signature and seals. With original box.
44″ x 24″ – $300

These next two come as a pair (sofuku), and were painted by another life student of zen buddhism, Watanabe Shoei (1873 – ?) . However, studying the arts of tranquility and creating paintings to transport people there could not stop the madness of WWII from destroying his home and his life.
Both 76″ x 14″ – Pair: $800

Here’s a lovely ukiyo-e bijin-ga by the great Ito Shinsui. The oiran (geisha, or, courtesan) is tuning a tzutsumi. With original box.
76″ x 22″ – $500
A lovely piece with a nice old mounting by a master of the melancholic, Tanomura Chokunyu (1814 – 1907). He was a pupil of the great Tanomura Chikuden (1777 – 1835). The original tomobako (storage box), made of paulownia wood, was authenticated (see last picture) in 1920.
72″ x 19″ – $500
