“Kakejiku” Hand Painted Japanese Scrolls
Hi there folks… Coyote here… Japanese resident and art lover. Please feel free to browse my “kakejiku” — original Japanese art in a hanging scroll form. These beautiful, original paintings are often very traditional in style, reflect each artist’s unique sensibilities about their country, and are, stylistically, very different from region to region and school to school. They are an art-form still uncommon in the west and can add harmonious qualities to your “tokonoma” – the place where you receive guests and share art and ideas. Drop by for a look if you happen to be in Kensington Market. Ciao for now… C.

This last painting, with incredible detail, is Yoshitsune to Benkei. Legend has it that Benkei was collecting a thousand swords. He had 999 when he encountered Yoshitsune and could not best him. They became fast friends and great warrior-partners, claiming many great victories in battle until the day that Benkei was shot with so many arrows that he died… but his strength was so great that he did not fall – he died standing on his feet!
Late 20th century – Painted by Seigetsu – $750

Here is a lovely, very traditional waterfall scene by a Tosa school painter. It is approximately 200 years old. There is some wrinkling and it is a little foxed overall, but it is still in good, normal condition for its age and will hang nicely.

This type of painting is called “kacho-ga”, which means “bird and flower” composition. -$1000

This is another Tosa-school painting by Tosa Mitsuzane (1780 – 1852). It is a very delicate, sensitive composition. Mitsuzane studied with his father, Tosa Mitsuoki (not the first or second famous Tosa Mitsuoki – the third one) and is considered one of the best Tosa artists of the late Edo period (1603-1867). Tosa Mitsuzane is collected internationally, his works are in the Kyoto National Museum, and his pieces have been auctioned by Bonhams.
