Ikai Shokoku – 猪飼 嘯谷 (1881-1940) – Bamboo & Snail – 竹とカタツムリ

Ikai-san was born in Kyoto in 1881. He studied painting with Kōkyō Taniguchi and specialized in  the Shijō (四條派)School of Painting. Afterwards he became an assistant professor at the Kyoto School of Arts and Crafts. Many of his pieces were exhibited regularly starting in 1908. He excelled at portraits and paintings of ancient themes and his pieces are held in museums (Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery) and private collections. A few minor damages to the paper around the painting, otherwise fine condition. This piece was re-mounted within the last 30 years. Since ancient times, bamboo has been auspicious for flexibility and resilience of the heart-mind (kokoro) as well as quickly rising to the top (success of the family).
