Kobayashi Tohun was first introduced to calligraphy by his mother as a young boy. This was followed by years of training in sumi-e painting and study of both Japanese and Chinese masters. His studies led him to the Beijing Palace Museum and it’s teachers, which greatly elevated his skills. By 1987, he was exhibiting in Paris, China, Indonesia, and the United States. By the early 90’s, he had received numerous awards at both home and abroad. In 1992, at the Chinese History Museum in Tiananmen Square, the “Celebration of the 20th Anniversary of China – Japan Friendship and Kobayashi Tohun Exhibition” organized by the Ministry of Culture, was held. Kobayashi-san is the recipient of the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology prize (2012), the recipient of the Prime Minister’s prize (2017), and was selected to paint the walls of this ancient temple designated an Important Cultural Property, an endeavor that was completed in 2014. He is also a professor and author of several books on painting techniques and art history. A video of Kobayashi-san painting for an audience in Zurich can be seen here.
