Nishijima Katsuyuki – 西嶋勝之 (b. 1945) – Tawaraya Ryokan – 俵屋旅館

SOLD. THANK-YOU!

This ryokan is on my list of places to stay in Kyoto, but probably only for one day considering that the cost is $500-$1000/night. Many aristocrats and daimyo have frequented this inn. Over 300 years old, it is one of the oldest in Kyoto, and the dinner included in the fee is a renowned highlight. A zen garden can be viewed from every Japanese style room. The final photo shows the verso saturation into the strong, hand-made washi paper. Nishijima-san was born in 1945 in Yamaguchi Prefecture. He studied moku hanga at Mikumo publishing house in Kyoto 1964-1968 / Exhibited with Kyoto Independents 1965-1970 and in solo and group shows / Experimented with stencil dyeing and printing 1969-1972 / From 1972 focused on limited edition sosaku-hanga woodblocks. Hand-signed and titled by the artist.
