Person of Cultural Merit, Nishiyama Suishō – 文化功労者, 西山翠嶂 (1879–1958) – Heron – サギ科

$500.00 CAD

An economy of line, a softness of tone and a tender, gentle approach to composition is apparent in a majority of Nishiyama Suisho‘s paintings.  He had a long and very distinguished career that culminated in being deemed a Person Of Cultural Merit. Here, the heron perched upon the boat is auspicious for success, and is appropriately placed directly above the bamboo, which is good luck for strength, flexibility and quickly rising to the top. The same stamp used for this piece was also used for this piece in a permanent collection in Japan. Two more hanging scrolls in the permanent collection of the Chisoku Art Museum can be seen here. A more intensive rendering of one of his favorite subjects can be seen here (that piece only available in Japan upon appointment). Recently remounted. The original jikusaki (roller ends) were used for remounting. Very good condition (the faintest of foxing).
