Satake Eiryo – 佐竹永陵 (1872-1937) – Bamboo – 竹

$225.00

We are very choosy about the bamboo we select for our collection. Although this one has many wrinkles and folding lines, it is a good example of a master of bamboo sumi-e. Satake Eiryo (1872-1937) was born in Tokyo and was Satake Eiko’s (1836-1909) best student, eventually taking over his studio. His master had many successful students and was an expert on Tani Bunchō, something Eiryo took up, both of them being known for authentication as well. He was a member and co-founder of the Nihon Nanso-ga painting group with Matsubayashi Keigetsu. The poetry speaks of the majestic beauty of this Kyoto bamboo tree. One of his pieces is held in the Smithsonian.
