Born in Omi (present day Shiga prefecture), Tsukioka Sessai 月岡雪齋, was a painter of the late Edo period. The eldest son of Tsukioka Settei, he studied under his father and Yoshimura Shuzan. He was good at figure and flower and bird painting, and like his father and Hokusai, was skilled at painting fish and waves. For his talents, comportment and work ethic, he was awarded the honorable title of “Hogen” by the Shogunate. Signed “Hogen Tsukioka Sessai”. Good normal condition (folding lines, small tears on upper edges, small stain). Unique, old, lost style of craftsmanship of the wood jikusaki roller ends.
