Akahada-ware Tea Bowl – 赤膚焼茶碗 from Ogawa Niraku – 小川二楽

Akahada-ware is a traditional type of pottery found in Nara prefecture. It is one of the seven distant kiln styles of Kobori Enshū. Ogawa Niraku’s work follows the family’s traditions closely, drawing from very simple, endearing folk art that draws from some of the basics of Yamato-e. The clay is sourced with the utmost care from ancient sources. The kiln’s showroom can be seen here, and one of the techniques can be seen here.
