Hiroshige was one of the most prolific artists in Japanese history. This piece was originally produced in 1831 for the series “Famous Places in the Eastern Capital Tōto meisho“. Original Publisher: Shōeidō (Kawashō). It is an excellent example of the wonderful dynamic and balanced landscape style of Hiroshige. Pine trees are auspicious for longevity, endurance and steadfastness (because they stay green). Calm water is a Zen reflection of one’s inner calm. Lone fishermen are a Zen reminder of the importance of setting aside time to think and contemplate.
