Andō Hiroshige – 安藤 広重 (1797-1858) – Irises & White Heron – 花菖蒲に白鷺

SOLD. THANK-YOU!

The original of this beauty was published during what is considered Hiroshige’s best period for kachō-ga  (1832-36). The blocks were expertly carved so that one could be used without any pigment to make permanent impressions in the strong washi paper and create the feathers on the heron. Compare the quality of this edition with the original held at The Met at this link here. Ancient Buddhist symbolism makes this piece auspicious for success and loyalty. Published by Takamizawa (Est. 1911). Company stamp on verso (see picture 2). Fine registration, impressions, bleed and saturation. Excellent condition. In original archival folder with printed details in Japanese and English. – Will look very dynamic in the right frame. Date: Shōwa period.
