Hiroshige was one of the most prolific artists in Japanese history. This piece was originally produced in 1832 for the series “Eight Views Of Omi Province”. Original Publisher: Shōeidō (Kawashō). This wonderful “sansui – 山水” (mountain and water landscape [here, the water is mostly defined by mist and fog]) takes inspiration from many of the best sansui that he had studied up to that point (with a strong nod to Hokusai), and with a precedent being given to the best multi-color landscapes of the most revered bunjin nanga painters. Mountains symbolize immortality, a temple is meditation, isolation and contemplation, and mist or fog is a Zen reminder of the intangible things in life that we can’t grasp or comprehend.

Date: Shōwa period. Publisher: Takamizawa. *Please click the top left corner of the photos to enlarge them.
