Widely known in Kappa aficionado circles, Hakuu (born in Kumamoto Prefecture) is known to this day for his playful paintings of the legendary river Yokai, -Kappa. One of his pieces is featured in this aficionado publication, -final page, this link.
From his earliest days, Hakuu was part of the modernist movement in the early part of the last century. His teacher was the great Katayama Nanpu, and he helped found the group “Nihongafu” with Kodama Sanrei. He was selected to show in exhibition at the ages of 23 and 25 (Japanese Art Academy). After WWII, he exhibited at the Nihonga Painting Exhibition. He also went on to join and exhibit with the Great Harmony Society.
