As a young man in the thick of the modernization of Japan after the Meiji Restoration, Kotei initially studied western painting extensively. As he matured, and partially due to his studies with the great Kawabata Gyokushō, he switched to studying Nanga, or, Southern Chinese style painting, and kept up with the strides in Nihonga. In 1901, he received first prize for his entry at the Japan Art Association. The same year, in a day, he painted a picture for each one of 1,224 guests at a summer party – an impressive accomplishment!

Excellent condition (normal aging and small flaws being around 100 years old). Expertly remounted in the Showa period. The remounting artisan brilliantly used parts of the original mounting to help it keep part of its original artistic spirit and intent. The vase pictured is not included in the purchase.
