Hanaikada means “flower raft” and refers to the clusters of cherry blossoms that float along the surface of a body of water after coming down from nearby trees. This elegant bowl is Gohon style pottery, which was introduced to Japan from Korea. They became popular from the Azuchi-Momoyama (1573-1603) until the early Edo period (1603-1868). The term gohon refers to the pattern book from which the pottery was chosen and ordered by Japanese tea masters and daimyo from the distant Busan kilns.

The gohon pottery is usually thin, featuring a simple painting decoration. Ash is applied to the bowl with a stiff brush in fast strokes, and when being fired under precise kiln conditions, pink and grey spots appear. -Recommended.
