Mashiba Hisayoshi was a name made up by the writer of this kabuki play so that people would know that the character was actually the legendary Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who was one of many historical figures that it was officially illegal to depict in theater. From the kabuki play “Sanmon Gosan no Kiri” 樓門五山桐. Yoshitaki was the most prolific designer of kabuki woodblock prints in Osaka from the 1860’s to the 1880’s.
