Noburo Sawai (1931-2016) was a highly influential Japanese-Canadian master printmaker and educator renowned for fusing Eastern and Western artistic methodologies.

Born in Takamatsu, Japan, he immigrated to the United States in 1950. After surviving a nine-year battle with tuberculosis in a Texas sanatorium—where he initially learned leather carving—he resumed his academic studies, earning an MFA from the University of Minnesota in 1969. In 1970, he returned to Tokyo to train under legendary master Toshi Yoshida at the International Hanga Academy.

His works are held in the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the National Gallery of Canada, etc.

This piece was designed to look like it was produced from rough pencil shading and ink-work, -as he did his best to capture his original illustration in print form and succeeded quite brilliantly!

Signed, sealed, titled and designated as an Artist’s Proof.

Dimensions: 20″ x 26.25″ – Will be shipped professionally in an industrial strength tube.
