Samurai class literati artist from Fukuoka who excelled at Nanga. Father of Chikutei (1895-1945). Works held in the British Museum, etc. The peony is auspicious for beauty, elegance, refinement, rank and status. They call it “King of the Flowers”. He is one of the artists on this collaboration at the Ashmolean. Since we have a great appreciation for the work of the great Meiji period Nanga masters, we also have scrolls by 2 of the other artists on that collaboration, Tanomura Chokunyu and Murata Kokoku.
