Hirai Baisen – 平井楳仙 (1889-1969) – 塔 – Temple Pagoda

Born and educated in Kyoto, Hirai-san went off the beaten path after art school. He spent some time painting in China and established a recognizable “bird’s eye view” approach to painting, becoming one of the new figures in “Nihonga”. In the first three decades of the last century, he was featured prominently in exhibitions. A more extensive biography can be read here. Some of his pieces in the Seattle Art Museum can be seen here. The last photo is another of the artist as a young man. Good condition (some light creases).
