Kanō “Josen” Chikanobu – 狩野如川周信 (1660–1728) – Crane & Pine – 鶴と松
$550.00 CAD
Chikanobu was the 3rd head of the Kobikicho Kanō family – one of the most prestigious families in the history of Japanese art. He painted whole wall paintings for the Tokugawa Shogunate in Edo Castle as well as large folding screens as gifts for the Korean Dynasty. In 1719, he was ordained with the rank of “Hōgen” (法元) for his talents, comportment and devotion to Buddhist art and studies. Since he was retained by the Shogunate, he had the best materials at his disposal and this is one of the finest gold silks that I have ever felt, -made by the best silk making family by feeding the silkworms only the best mulberry leaves. There is also a subtle, delicate use of real gold paint. Its reflective qualities are gorgeous. Signed “Josen hitsu” with 2 seals. Good, normal condition for its age (small damages, wear, and a split in the lower part of the painting). Cranes and pines are both auspicious for longevity. There is much more ancient symbolism in the subject matter that will be shared upon purchase!
