Tan’yū was one of the greatest Japanese artists of the early Edo period. Signed “Tan’yū guarding the eye of the law” (狩野守法眼) – 法眼 – Hōgen (The eye of the law) for Japanese painters represents an honorary title and rank bestowed upon master artists, doctors, and scholars, particularly from the Heian period onward. It indicates the artist was highly accomplished and recognized by the imperial court or high-ranking patrons.
We say “Attributed to” for this scroll, because although there are many indicators that this is an authentic Tan’yū, we can not be certain, -and when we are not certain, we refrain from committing to providing a document of authenticity. The aging of the scroll puts it in the potential time period of the late 1600’s if it was kept in a tomobako (traditional storage box) for most of its life. The use of premium materials, including the thickly-lacquered jikusaki (roller ends), indicates a superior mounting by a master artisan. This may have been painted by one of Tan’yū’s disciples. The backs of the jikusaki show their wear, slowly tapping against the walls in the breeze (such a wabi-sabi image…😌).
This scroll has been given an new cord and is now strong enough to hang without concern of it breaking. Normal condition for its age (creases, small damages, aging, toning, etc… refer to all photos).
