This poem by the tenth century poet Kiyohara no Fukayabu, originally appeared in the “Summer” section of the Kokin waka shū. His lamentation of the fleeting moon inspired Hokusai’s imagined scene of a night’s outing on a pleasure boat to escape the heat:
“Natsu no yo wa, mada yohi nagara, akenuru no, kumo no izu ko ni, tsuki ya doruran.” –
“A summer’s night in twilight still barely begun the moon must be somewhere awake, too, in amongst the clouds.” The original was made circa 1835. This edition published by the Adachi Company (company stamp on back of print). High quality, rich colour and expert shading. Small wrinkle top right corner that will smooth out with proper framing. Excellent condition. Large “dai-oban” size. Date: Shōwa period.
