Kawabata-san was born in Kyoto to a family of lacquer artists. He first studied the Maruyama style with Nakajima Raisho. In 1866, he went to Tokyo to learn Western painting under Charles Wirgman but quickly returned to Nihonga (Japanese traditional painting) and Shijo-ha. After years of hard work, he became a leading figure in Tokyo Art circles. In 1890 he was appointed a professor at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. Very good condition (minor foxing). Comes in the original artisan handmade storage box, titled and signed by the artist. The ancient auspicious symbolism will be shared upon purchase. The fuchin (scroll weights hanging from the roller ends) are not included in the purchase.
