Product Description

Kawano was born in Hokkaido and studied art at the Kawabata Art School. His first exhibition was with the Nihon Hanga Kyôkai (Japan Print Society) in 1944. His career was interrupted when he joined the army, and was taken a prisoner of war in Siberia. Unlike many of his fellow POWs he was able to return to Japan, where he resumed exhibiting. In 1949 he exhibited again with the Nihon Hanga Kyôkai. He moved to Tokyo in 1958, and had solo exhibitions in New York, Seattle, Chicago, and elsewhere.
As a sosaku-hanga artist, he not only designed his prints but also carved the blocks and printed from them himself. Unfortunately, due to heart problems and poor health, he was never able to travel abroad to his exhibitions and died at the age of 49.
