A courtesan gives a possible client a flirtatious glance. This image is drawn directly from the artists’ experiences in the Yoshiwara (red light) district of Tokyo. Utamaro’s work had a great influence on the artists of France, and is an early example of pages that would come to exist in the fashion magazines that would begin to gain popularity around the world over 100 years later. From “Ten Types in the Physiognomic Study of Women” (Fujin sōgaku juttai 婦人相学十躰). Originally printed about 1792–93. This edition: Showa period.

Excellent condition. Expertly hand-printed one colour at a time. Rich saturation into high quality washi paper (see last picture). Gorgeous details and reflective mica pigments.
