Trained in the ways of a literati artist from a young age, Masakata the Daimyo had many great friends in the arts and helped promote many of them as well. As a lord, he was responsible for 20,000 koku in taxes every year (about 150,000 kilograms of rice a year. In the context of feudal Japan, it represented the amount of rice a domain or individual was expected to produce or control, and was used to determine wealth and status. One koku was generally considered enough rice to feed one person for a year). This scroll is auspicious for meditating on the ways of the highly cultured. His works are held in the British Museum, Nagoya City Museum, Tokyo National Museum, etc. – An exhibition of his works was held in Mie in 2019.
