Matsuoka Toshiyuki – 松岡敏行 (b. 1921) – Limited Edition Mimeograph – 謄写版 – Noko-shima – 能古島
$250.00 CAD
From Shimonoseki , Yamaguchi, Matsuoka-san graduated from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1944. In 1949, he found success making hanga covers for children’s poetry books. He exhibited with and was a member of Nihon Nanga Kyokai. Besides exhibiting in the U.S. and Italy, he was a teacher in Kita Kyushu. He is held in the Museum of Modern Art Wakayama (see image 10). Since Noko-shima is close to his home town, perhaps this was a day trip for Matsuoka-san, and perhaps his family knew that he might paint… …and maybe that is one of his children? The final picture shows a beach on the island, -perhaps the same one. The richness of the color of this piece is quite impressive. Very good condition (a few faint creases towards the edges of the unprinted margin that will be obscured when framed). 21.5″ x 15″ (paper size), 16.5 x 10.5 (image size). Numbered #18/200 – 1989. Rare.
