From Shimonoseki , Yamaguchi, Matsuoka-san graduated from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1944. In 1949, he found success making hanga covers for children’s poetry books. He exhibited with and was a member of Nihon Nanga Kyokai. Besides exhibiting in the U.S. and Italy, he was a teacher in Kita Kyushu. He is held in the Museum of Modern Art Wakayama (see image 10). This is another gorgeous sunset just outside of Nagasaki that Matsuoka-san captured with his brush (the last photo is an example of the region). The richness of color of this piece is quite impressive. Matsuoka-san’s unique use of the mimeograph was exceptional. Very good condition. 21.5″ x 15″ (paper size), 16.5 x 10.5 (image size). Numbered #28/120 – 1989. Very rare.
