Born into the family of a precious metals dealer in Bakuro-cho (Chuo Ward), Osaka, Kenzan’s birth name was Yoshiro. He studied under his older brother, the great Mizuta Chikuho, who excelled so brilliantly at painting and calligraphy that he worked with the legendary Tessai. He studied Chinese classics under Nangaku, and in 1918 he moved to Kyoto to study Nanga painting. He later became active mainly at the Japan Nanga Academy, and was selected three times at the Teiten Exhibition. He painted landscapes influenced by Post-Impressionism. After the war, he exhibited mainly on commission at the Nitten Exhibition. He was also a director and auditor of the Japan Nanga Academy. His works are held in numerous museums, including the MOMAT (which can be seen here).
