Nagano Sofu – 長野草風 (1885~1949) – Peach Blossoms – 桃の花

Nagano-san was born in Tokyo and studied with Murata Tanryo and Kawai Gyokudō. He showed at exhibitions regularly, starting early at the Bunten, winning a prize at the first show in 1907. As his style developed, he excelled at decorative painting with pronounced colour schemes.

Signed and sealed “Sofu”, the Go (art name) of Nagano Moriyuki. He is held in the Yoshizawa Memorial Museum of Art, the Postal Museum Japan, the Tokyo Museum, – (second piece seen here), the National Museum of Art, and many other private and public collections.

One of his ancestors was the samurai Andō Nobumasa. The forth last picture shows his fondness for painting fully opened blossoms in a piece selected for exhibition in 1910. The third last picture shows the same name seal on a piece in a private collection, and the last two pictures show how his signature was stylized differently when signing pieces that included long branches and blossoms (like this one).

Very appropriate, elegant wood jikusaki (roller ends). Very good condition. This is a smaller-sized scroll that is easier to work into limited empty wall space.
