Nishijima Katsuyuki – 西嶋勝之 (b. 1945) – Tatsumi Bridge, Gion District – 辰巳橋祇園

Nishijima-san is a current elder statesman of the Kyoto woodblock scene. His pieces have been delighting lovers of traditional scenes of the city for decades. They range from dynamic, manageable medium-sized pieces, to pieces much larger, which are strikingly impressive, like this one. Nishijima-san started to exhibit by age 20 and by the late 60’s was also stencil printing. Some of his many personal exhibitions have been in Tokyo, San Francisco, Sydney, etc. and he is held in museum and private collections around the world. Signed, numbered 4/500 and titled by the artist. Excellent condition. This laneway becomes Tatsumi Bridge, which was featured in the novel “Memoirs of a Geisha”. It is very appropriate that Nishijima-san makes romantic use of the lantern in the foreground, which is advertising the Miyako Odori, because it is one of the four great spring shows in the five geisha districts of Kyōto. Lovers and courtesans have been strolling up and down these laneways and over this bridge since ancient times… …and spring is symbolic of love in bloom.
