SOLD. – THANK-YOU!

Born in Hirosaki to the prestigious old Hirosaki clan, Joyo’s birth name was Michiharu. His first teacher was the great Mikami Sennen, (三上仙年) who was also part of the ruling Hirosaki clan, and who himself studied with Matsuyama Unsho (松山雲章) and Fukujima Kozan (福島晃山 – top scroll). He went to Kyoto at age 28 to further study painting under the great Imao Keinen, and presented to the Japan Art Association every year, -receiving numerous awards. At age 37, he traveled to China and spent 8 years studying painting. In 1914, he was chosen for one of his highest honors, and was invited to brush calligraphy for Prince Chichibu. He eventually returned to Tokyo in 1919, where he presented his work at several solo exhibitions to regular acclaim. Joyo died of a cerebral hemorrhage in 1937. This piece features all of the regular classic auspicious symbolism of Nanga painting, which includes: immortality / a Zen reminder of the intangible things in life that we can not grasp / isolation, meditation, contemplation / and humility. One of his masterpieces is kept in the Aomori Prefectural Museum. Normal, good condition for its age (some creases – otherwise, still very enjoyable). Fine, high quality silk mounting.
