This Lavenberg Collection link details Ogata-san’s early biography, initial international success, prizes at exhibitions and great contributions to the artform of woodblock printing, whose existence at the time was being contested by other forms of printing that sprang forth from the industrial revolution. The scene from the tea ceremony displayed here (sadō, or, cha-no-yu) is just one of many details that can be depicted from start to finish, because the ceremony actually starts with one’s own dress and deportment before arriving at the tea house. It then continues with the arrival and walk down the path to the house (all specifically designed by a master of garden design), the greeting, etc. etc… Here, the ladies are entering the chashitsu with much decorum and reverence for the ceremony which will continue inside. Signed and sealed “Gekkō.”

Expert carving and hand-printing. Exquisite details. Good, normal condition (trimmed margins). *Click the top left corner of each picture after enlarging them, to enlarge them even further!
