“Bamboo has upper and lower joints.” This is a very important Zen phrase. One reading is that bamboo joints are the strongest parts of the bamboo, so the further away from the joint, the weaker the part of the bamboo. This is true of ourselves in that the further we drift away from our strengths, the closer we get to our weaknesses. Also, since ancient times, bamboo has been auspicious for strong family because it grows up quickly, straight and strong. So, a family must know its strengths and weaknesses in order to avoid failing. Also, even though there are upper and lower joints, the upper ones are not superior to the lower ones – this equality applies to human beings as well. Very good condition. Signed: 前大徳香林 (Zen Daitoku Korin). Korin was a chief priest of Daitoku-ji. After graduating from Hanazono University, Korin studied with Maruyama Denne (1871-1940) and was ordained, after which, at the age of 38, he took up his first position of chief priest at Korin-in Temple. This was followed by Enshin-ji, and then Ryuo-ji. After these positions, he returned to the main complex in Kita-ku.
