If you were a good student of the great Mori Kansai and Kawabata Gyokusho, and you worked hard and had some talent, you were fairly certain to be guaranteed a place in the most prestigious center for art in Japan – Kyōto. Such artists also had the resources to use the best materials available, and the quality of the gold paint applied to silk here is among the best in the world. Okutani-san repeatedly won prizes in exhibitions and regularly sold to distinguished patrons. One of his masterpieces can be seen here. Since ancient times, the peach has been auspicious for wealth, abundance, health and logevity. The honshi (painted area) is in good condition. The mounting shows light foxing on the artisan hand-made washi (see pictures).
