Since ancient times, monkeys have symbolized the “id” of the individual. The oldest of the three Freudian psychic realms in development, it contains the psychic content related to the primitive instincts of the body, notably sex and aggression, as well as all psychic material that is inherited and present at birth. Ancient Buddhism defined it and gave it animal symbolism thousands of years before the works of Freud. For the Buddhist serious about enlightenment, retaining a clear mind instead of turning it over to the unbridled emotions of the id, is paramount. Here, the two monkeys are calm, undisturbed, and in a paradisal setting. The original is in the collection of the Tokyo University of the Arts.

Hashimoto Gahō was one of the greatest artists of the Meiji Period, and is generally considered the last great Kanō school artist. If you are interested in acquiring an authentic piece by this great master, -click here.
