Ransen was born in Aizumi, Tokushima. He first studied with Himejima Chikugai in Osaka. He then moved to Tokyo and studied with the great Hashimoto Gahō. He moved again after that to a small town, Muyacho, Okazaki, where he could live a quiet life as a literati-artist. In Muyacho, he continued to master the art of the sumi-e sansui, which is on full display with this scroll we have acquired. Unfortunately, photography can not capture the majesty and depth of this piece. In his later years, he moved to Minami, where he helped run his first master’s school
Surviving records show that Ransen made the official lists of famous painters in 1926, `27 & `1937. -*Very-good condition!
