The legendary Tessai, who was mostly self-taught, was a painter who embodied the ideal of literati painting, which is to “read 10,000 volumes of books and go on the road for ten thousand miles”. As one of the inheritors of that tradition, Kakunen (鶴年 – longevity, immortality, and wisdom – and he lived to be almost 100!) is known for his free and generous brushwork and exceptional poetic and calligraphy skills. He painted fusuma (sliding doors – seen in the picture gallery on this page) at Seigen-in in Ryōan-ji. The majority of his works are owned by successful Kyoto families.

Very good condition (very light foxing in a couple of places). Gorgeous high-quality silk mounting! This scroll is a powerful combination of wabi-sabi, truth, and the intangible things in life that we can’t grasp or comprehend (sakura, moon & clouds).
