The legendary Tessai, who was mostly self-taught, was a painter who embodied the ideal of literati painting, which is to “read 10,000 volumes of books and go on the road for ten thousand miles”. As one of the inheritors of that tradition, Kakunen (鶴年 – longevity, immortality, and wisdom – and he lived to be almost 100!) is known for his free and generous brushwork and exceptional poetic and calligraphy skills. He painted fusuma (sliding doors – seen in the picture gallery on this page) at Seigen-in in Ryōan-ji. The majority of his works are owned by successful Kyoto families.

The poetry (roughly translated) reads:

“For ten thousand generations, it remains unchanged—a celestial seed planted in the heavens; a single swirl of fragrant clouds comes winding through the empty sky.”「萬古依然天上種、一團香雲繞空來。」
