Suien was born in what is now known as Matsumoto City. He was born into a family that prospered in the ointment business and was attracted to arts and crafts at a young age. He was ambitious and enterprising and found success mostly through being self-taught, but also trained under the travelling painter Hekiho (碧鳳 – 1785? – 1867), from whom he acquired a passion for portraying people in everyday life in rural villages. In 1835, he presented a self-made inkstone box to the lord of the Suwa Takashima Domain, for which he was awarded a prize. He stayed in Matsumoto for most of his life and is considered the painter who laid the foundations for modern Japanese painting there.
