Shōnen was an undisputed, legendary master of the pine and rising sun composition (see a similar museum piece here). See his piece in the MET here. This is hardly a coincidence considering his name “Shōnen” means “pine year” and the symbol of Japan is the rising sun. Those who have since time immemorial, been able to understand and use the power of ancient symbolism in the arts have almost always been the ones to have the greatest impact on history. This painting is the quintessential composition hung for good luck for the new year and throughout, because pines are good luck for longevity, endurance and steadfastness and the sun is the yang.

Good condition for its age (toning, wrinkles, small stains, etc. – but still extremely enjoyable!)
