SOLD. -THANK-YOU!
Suzuki Shōsen was the son of the great Suzuki Shōnen, a family that was one of the most prominent samurai class artist families in Kyoto. They inherited this status from his grandfather, the great artist Suzuki Hyakunen (the piece at this link shows how the techniques of creating light and shadow in misty skies was passed down from grandfather to son, then to grandson [Shōsen studied under both]). His father and grandfather were also two of the best teachers in Kyoto for a span of many decades, and as we can see from this delicately painted landscape, the son lived up to his expectations as an heir to the great family name. Towards the end of WWII, things were so tumultuous that many people’s dates of death were not being documented. A piece of his in a fine arts magazine from 1907 can be seen here (click on it to enlarge). This piece is rife with ancient, auspicious symbolism and we would be happy to tell you about it. Normal ageing and toning, a few creases and the tiniest of stains. The final picture shows the same signature (far right one) in a private collection in Japan. *Please click on the upper left-hand corner of the photos to enlarge them a second time. Every purchase of art comes with an email tailored to the piece, with around 3 hours worth of further reading and documentary viewing.
