Chokunyū, who performed a tea ceremony for Emperor Meiji, was a legendary multi-disciplined painter and martial artist who served as the founding president of the Kyoto Prefectural School of Painting (now Kyoto City University of Arts). He is held in The MET and many more of the best museum collections in the world. Good condition (small stains and creases). Expertly remounted and now strong enough to hang for another 100 years or more. Comes in an artisan-made fitted wood box with the inscription of authentication by “Kaseki” – Watanabe Kaseki, 渡辺 華石 (1852-1930). The only noticeable small damage (picture 6) is actually quite wabi-sabi and a Zen reminder of the importance of ritual and meditation in front of hanging scrolls, -a tiny incense burn.
