Dōjin is one of the more delightfully colorful and mysterious characters in the pantheon of late Edo-period painters. For starters, his name translates as “heavenly dragon way person”. He lived in seclusion by lake Suwa, which legends records that there was a dragon that was sleeping beneath it for centuries. Dōjin lived into his 90’s and was a well-known eccentric monk who specialized in painting grapes, hawks and dragons. Was he that dragon who slept beneath the lake, living among us for a time in human form?

Grapes are auspicious for bountiful harvests and the propagation of the family. Normal condition for its age but still very enjoyable (many small damages, aging, stains, etc.). Every part of this scroll is original except the cord, which is new and will last for 100 years or more. Enjoy its true nature as the Japanese appreciate things in their state of “wabi-sabi”.
