Sanbō-in, which is a part of Daigo-ji Temple in Kyoto, is a national treasure that dates back to the late 16th century. It is most famous for its garden. Zen gardens came into existence during the Muromachi period, for the purpose of meditation and contemplation of the teachings of Buddha and those monks who have attained satori, or, “awakening” by direct transmission. It was co-designed by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who rose from being a peasant, to being one of the most powerful men in Japan at that time. He had a great affection for art and culture, and would spend time here for hana-mi (cherry blossom viewing parties).

Here, Tokuriki-san has captured a very dynamic angle which features the most prominent symbolism of this area of the garden. The autumn leaves are a Zen reminder of the transient nature of life. The waterfall reflects one’s energy and vitality within the larger body of calm water reflecting inner calm, -and the bridge represents the transition from one realm to the next (a state achieved when meditating, or, as the troubles of daily life are swept away by Zen surroundings). The group of rocks behind the small waterfall were placed and arranged to represent Mt. Hōrai. The last two photos show this garden during the same time of year.

This is a rare print. As of this writing, this is the only copy available for purchase online in the world. Made in the 1930’s. Signed by the artist on the back. Very good condition (slight foxing on back). Woodblock print on hard shikishi board, suitable for framing or mounting in a shikishi / tanzaku kakejiku (hanging scroll with tanzaku and shikishi mounting strings – see last picture). Many people in Japan frame shikishi, as they look excellent when framed. *Please click the top left corner of the picture a second time to enlarge it further.
