The Takagamine district was given by the shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa to Hon’ami Kōetsu (1558-1637) -[hence, Kōetsu-ji], who built an artist’s colony there and brought his family and many artisans to live there. Kōetsu was a multi-disciplined master, whose talents included sword polishing, calligraphy, ceramics, lacquer and the Japanese tea ceremony. Kōetsu is one of the three legendary masters of calligraphy of the Kan-ei era (1624-1644) along with Konoe Nobutaka, and Shōkadō Shōjō. Kōetsu’s love for the tea ceremony can be seen in the “shakkei” of Kōetsuji Temple, which focuses on the  7 tea houses within very large garden grounds.

Tomikichiro created prints from start to finish in his own workshop (Sōsaku-hanga), but also earned a living with Shin-hanga (collaborative efforts overseen by publishers). Born in Kyoto, he was a graduate of the School of Fine Arts and Crafts. He is fairly well known in the west. Hand-numbered 101 of 200.
