Mitsusada was a very important link in the lineage of the historically presitgious Tosa School. His works are held in the Harvard Art Museums, The British Museum, The MET, multiple temples in Japan, Ichinomiya City Museum (again, showing the Kōrin-Rinpa influence), and many others. While the Tosa school was traditionally known for its meticulous, official court style, Mitsusada is noted for adopting Rinpa’s bold, ornamental approach in several key ways. This piece was considered exceptionally modern for its time. The Japanese believe that paintings and woodblock prints become more beautiful as they age -as the strong, mineral and seashell powder pigments, mixed with ancient techniques that include animal bone glue, slowly continue to settle into the paper. This is evidenced by the photo of the back of the scroll, which clearly shows how the rich colors used for the bamboo have settled deeply into the original silk and paper and are quite visible.

The ancient, powerful auspicious symbols in the high-quality silk mounting include the Hōju (sacred jewel of wish fulfillment), blades for cutting away problems, and various Zuiun (瑞雲) – auspicious clouds.

Normal-fair condition for its age (toning, wrinkles, stains, aging etc. – but still strong and extremely enjoyable!)
