Utagawa Yoshikazu – 歌川芳員 (act. 1850-1870) – Shiki Saemon Masayoshi – 志喜左衛門正義 – Taiheiki – 太平記 – Chronicle of Great Peace

$500.00 CAD

Yoshikazu was a very successful painter of the Utagawa School. The Taiheiki is one of Japan’s most enduring warrior chronicles, which has been extrapolated upon extensively over the centuries. Prints from this series are held in the MFA. The colour-scheme of ours is different and ours has the censor’s seals and was therefor printed earlier than the ones held in the MFA, as censor’s seals were required during the Tokugawa Shogunate. Both ours and the MFA’s came from the same blocks, as can be evidenced from the wood grains discerned in the background colours. The absence of censor’s seals on the prints held in the MFA lead us to hypothesize that publishers may have pulled out old blocks and had more prints made for the foreigners who were coming to Japan for the first time, -as they may have been able to receive inflated prices for them from those ignorant of what they usually cost. In conclusion, different color-schemes coming from different printers was common during this time, as can be seen here (beginning with the fourth print). Beautiful real gold leaf in the mounting surrounding the print adds a lovely reflective quality and creates a dynamic energy around the print. Very good condition.
