The son of a successful fish merchant from the old Tango province in northern Kyoto on the Sea of Japan, Wada-san was a student of the great Kishi Ganku. He was a renowned master of painting dragons and tigers and was highly skilled at all of the other ancient, traditional subject matter for literati painters. One of his largest pieces, a dragon, which rests in Keio-ji Temple can be seen here. The signature of the dragon and some of his “fusuma” (sliding doors) can be seen here. Not having a determined date of death suggests that he may have passed during the chaotic turmoil of the Bakumatsu, which led to the Meiji Restoration. The final three pictures on this page are of two other pieces of his in personal collections in Japan. Fair, normal condition for its age (ageing, toning, small tears, stains, wrinkles etc. – but very strong and still has great longevity ahead if cared for properly). Large size scroll. *Please click the upper left corner of the pictures to expand them.
