Yokoyama-san was a Nanga painter born in Gifu Prefecture. He studied under Tajika Chikuson, Hashimoto Kansetsu and Domoto Insho (three highly notable painters, -the Domoto Insho museum is in Kyoto) . He graduated from the Kyoto School of Painting and was selected at the Teiten, Nitten, and Shin Nitten exhibitions. He died in 1979 at the age of 79. This piece displays his deep knowledge of pigment mixing that allowed Yokoyama to continue to expertly usher more colorful nanga compositions into the 20th c., much like his contemporary, the great Kōtei Fukui.

This piece is auspicious for many things based on the ancient Buddhist symbolism of the subject matter, including: Inner calm, contemplation, a Zen reminder of the intangible things in life (mist and fog) etc…
