Kitagawa Utamaro – 喜多川 歌麿 (1753-1806) – Tabacco Smoking Girl – 煙草を吸う女

SOLD. THANK-YOU!

Aloof and cool, like a hipster of the Edo period, the allure of the beauty and the expert carving that created the impressions into the washi paper outlining the  smoke add an impressive mystique to this print made by the publisher Yuyudo. Rich, mica pigments in the paint make the back ground and kimono shimmer in the light against each other. The morning glory motif on the kimono is appropriate, as the ancient symbolism of that flower is “the immediacy of love” because it opens quickly to the sun, as well as rebirth, because it opens and closes every day. The power of Utamaro was so great that he influenced the Impressionists. Excellent condition. In original viewing folder. Date: Shōwa period. Click the top left corner of the image to enlarge.
